Ridiculous! “EU declared Monsanto weedkiller safe after intervention from controversial US official” | The Guardian

We need to insist on impartiality by preventing outside actors from influencing investigations, especially when the outside actors (and their products) are the ones being investigated.

NYC Property Taxes

Ok so here’s my latest government run amok gripe. I received my property assessment and guess what? My property taxes are going up! Here’s what I don’t get…NYC has a budget. The tax burden amongst us property owners should be shared. If more property is being built, and there are certainly plenty of condos going up where I am in North Brooklyn,  you would think that would bring in more property tax revenue so the overall tax burden is spread across more property owners, thus it should get less for each individual owner. But no, it goes up! Yet for huge corporations like Google, their property taxes go down, despite what the City’s own assessors say!

Fair?  Hell no! What I would like to see is how the increase is being used to better my local community. Are there more trash collectors to pick up the extra garbage that’s going to be produced in my area due to the influx of condos? Is the local waste treatment plant ready for the influx of more crap? Will my kid’s public school get more teachers? More police? Firefighters?  What I would like to see is a before and after breakdown. A list showing what services we had before the tax hike and what we’re going to have after. Do we have that type of transparency?

As taxes increase, and my already huge monthly mortgage goes up, who do you think will actually be paying for the increase? The renters! So now you’ll have people who actually drive the economy with less money to spend in local businesses.

Thank you, new Mayor Bill DiBlasio.  I guess someone has to pay for the $170,000 salary for the First  Lady’s new Chief of Staff!

Cops Kill 95 Yr Old War Vet

This is crazy – Cops were called into an assisted living facility because of a resident, a WWII Vet, who refused to go to the hospital to get treated for a UTI. They came, tased him, shot him with a bean bag, He died of internal bleeding. WTF?

Regardless of the man’s attitude, refusal to get treated, whatever his state of mind, this was not the way to deal with the situation. Unless the guy had a gun and was a danger to others, the authorities and residence staff should’ve used better judgement,

Fake Police Drones Advertisement

Around NYC recently, “advertisements’ went up depicting an NYPD logo and a picture of a drone firing a missile at a family of three. The ad, which you can see here from the animalnewyork website, was obviously a fake.

The animalnewyork website has an interview with the artist. “Essam” who identifies with libertarianism and thinks Obama and Romney are the same.

I love the ad. It pretty much sums up my feelings, how the government along with the police forces are slowly chipping away at our freedoms and liberty.  And news items, such as the following, of questionable killings by police officers, gives me a cold chill down my spine:

There are plenty more, someone should compile  a running list.

There are plenty of good officers who certainly protect the citizens of this great country. But the events like those listed above surely make you think.

Regarding the fake ad though, I hope they don’t find the artist.

GOOD: A Few Things to Remind People Quoting That Organic Food Study

FINALLY!! Some sensible comments about THAT organic food study. Yes, the one all those websites were  posting and reposting and copying from one another about yesterday:

Whoa, slow down, internet and television news! Man, one document says organic food might not be worth the dollar and you’d think an organic vegetable had held up a bank.

The studies that the review looked at were small….Nutrients are only part of the equation…Highly quoted was that the conventional diet mostly fell within allowed limits for pesticides. Here’s what you should know: The EPA sets these limits…The review was inconclusive.

FUD of the Day: NPR – Why Organic Food May Not Be Healthier For You

Here’s your FUD for the day – courtesy of NPR no less – Why Organic Food May Not Be Healthier For You

Yes, organics is a $29 billion dollar industry, and still growing. Something is pulling us toward those organic veggies that are grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.

But if you’re thinking that organic produce will help you stay healthier, a new finding may come as a surprise. A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds scant evidence of health benefits from organic foods.

Come on NPR – what a misleading title.

As you might expect, there was less pesticide contamination on organic produce. But does that matter? The authors of the new study say probably not. They found that the vast majority of conventionally grown food did not exceed allowable limits of pesticide residue set by federal regulations.

What kind of nonsense is that? It probably takes about 10 years for the pesticides accumulating in our body to show any effects. At which point it might be too late. Organic Food is waaay healthier. No doubt. You, NPR, can have your federally set limit on allowable pesticide residue. I will do without it. I can’t control what’s in the air I breath, but I can control what I put into my body.

Japan Sets Radiation Standards For Fish

So what happens when you dump radioactive toxic water into the ocean? The fishes become radioactive! And how do you get people to eat radioactive fish? Set a standard that says how much radiation in fish is OK!

Which is what Japan is doing:

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano says the government will apply the maximum allowable radiation limit for vegetables to fish.

The move came after the health ministry reported that fish caught off Ibaraki prefecture — which is about halfway between the plant and Tokyo — contained levels of radioactive iodine that exceeded the new legal limit. Cesium was also found just below the limit. The fish were caught Friday, before the safety limit was announced Tuesday.

Please. No level of radio active material inside the body is safe. The TEPCO folks are saying the radiation in the water will dissipate. What they don’t tell you is that the little radioactive fish you just ate will continue to give off radiation inside your body.
